About us
 Who we are?
Ohi Älä Käy is an independent humanitarian non-profit organization founded in 2004. Its founding members
are Lauri and Helvi Siljoranta, Mariah Kari ja Suvi Mähönen - ordinary citizens who wanted to find
a channel for making good deeds in benefit of the disadvantaged. The organization has grown, and today, includes many other members with
their own strengths, and is supported by few local companies and regular donors.
We warmly welcome everyone interested in contributing to our work.
Our approach
We receive clothing and household items as donations to be sent off to orphanages and street children shelters. Financial
donations are primarily spent on food relief, and on occasion we provide financial assistance for the organization
of summer camps for children. Essentially, the evaluation of need forms as the basis of our help. Through our long time
trusted contacts in the Baltics, we are kept well informed of the level of need. For a comprehensive list of who exactly
we help, please explore the "Where we work" page. The list includes orphanages, street children shelters, few individual families,
and schools in remote villages. We personally deliver all donations and other aid from the donor to the children.
The active members of the organization are responsible for sorting and packaging of all the items received.
The executive director of the charity, Mr. Siljoranta, and his wife, Helvi, take care of delivering the aid packages personally
to those in need. The organization aims at arranging these deliveries as often as possible, usually six to ten times a year.
The cost of one trip, comprising of gasoline and ship ticket expenses, totals in 250-300 euros. These expenses are covered
by membership fees and donations.
One of our main principles is that we do not buy services nor take salary for the work that we do. Donations are strictly used to
compile aid packages and to cover travel costs and other inevitable expenses, as set by the Finnish law.
